The Ice Cube

“ Does an ice cube melt faster in air or in water” That was the title for my science fair project. The reason I choose this problem was because I wanted to find out the answer to this important question. I did some research and I have found out that ice cubes melt faster in water because of the number of water molecules surrounding the ice is much greater than the number of air molecules surrounding the ice cube. When ice melts heat has to be absorbed from the surrounding particles in contact with it. Since there are more water molecules that could provide more heat, ice would melt faster when it is put on water, assuming that both the water and the air temperature is the same and that is according to Singapore Science Center. I had a lot of challenges while doing this project. Choosing the topic was not as hard as preparing for the experiment. I had a problem while making a movie of my experiment because the camera was out of battery, so I had to use my phone camera. Finally, I had to do another movie because the sound of the fires movie didn’t exist.

The Strength of the Magnet

“Does the size of the magnet affects its strength” that was the problem I chose to research for the English class. Ahmed Moustafa, our English teacher, has asked us to find scientific problems and work to solve them. I did this project because I thought that the magnet is an important material in our lives and also because I wanted to know the answer to my question. We use the magnet in many electrical machines like the radio and TV. We also use it to produce electricity. I did a research on the problem and I have found that every magnet has its own field. It is called the magnet field. If this field increases the magnet will be stronger. One way to increase this field is when we increase the size of the magnet.. However, there are other ways of making the magnet stronger than increasing its size and they don’t cost as much. I have encountered some problems while doing my project but I have worked hard to solve them. The first challenge was getting the materials. Bringing the magnets was easy but I did not know from where I can get theiron dust. I asked some friends who sent me to the industrial area in Al Ain where I bought it. At first I measured the weight of every magnet then I measured the weight of every magnet with the iron dust. Finally I found the difference in weight and that was the weight of the attracted iron dust. I learnt a lot from the science project. By doing this project I understood the scientific method and I have improved my vocabulary and written English. I have also developed my spoken English because I have practiced my English while doing this project. I would advise the next year students to choose a question to which they do not know the answer and never give up in the face of any problem.

Basketball Man Makes It Bounce Higher

The problem I chose was “Does more air inside a basketball make it bounce higher”. I chose such a scientific problem because it would be interesting to do it. Besides, I play basketball too. I also did this project because I could do it in a very good way. So my project could be of great value to those who play basketball. It will tell them exactly the amount of air they need to add to make a basketball bounce higher. I did some research and I found that the basketball bounces because of air and gravity. The more air the basketball has inside it the higher it bounces. The basketball is also an elastic material that means that it can change its shape when you bounce the basketball. It hits the ground and it is deformed and the kinetic energy it has changes to potential energy. When it returns back to its original shape , the potential energy changes to kinetic energy. However the basketball does not bounce by itself, the surface it bounces on affects the bounce. My research is based on what I have learnt in science class and also from the Internet. As for the challenges I faced while doing this project I can say that they were many. First I when I wanted to choose a problem it took me sometime because every time I choose a problem I found out that another classmate is doing something similar to it. So I had to look for a new one. I couldn’t take pictures of my experiment myself, so I had to call someone to help me take pictures of me while doing the experiment. One thing I learnt is to stand up for a challenge and never give up until I overcome the problem. I have also improved my written English for I have written the whole project, comments on my classmates’ projects, and at end I wrote a reflection about my own project. I have also worked on my academic reading by reading lots of research from the internet and reading my classmates works. The last thing was learning how to give a good presentation and I have benefited a lot from my classmates comments on my presentations and that has helped me to improve my skills. I have found that I have done some mistakes while conducting the experiment like I did not measure the amount of air inside the basketball. The quality of the pictures taken while doing the experiment was not good. I also used an old basketball to do the experiment. I made those mistakes even though I have planned well so I advise you to plan and be ready before you do your project.

The Sound of Silence

The English teacher, Ahmed Moustafa, told us that we will have a science fair at the end of cycle six. The idea of a science fair was new to so many of us. Slowly we were introduced to samples of scice fair projects and the idea became clearer day after day. I chose a scientific problem that I did not know the answer for. “ does the sound travel best during solid, liquid, or gas” was my problem. I thought that the best thing to work on this problem to solve it. It sounded very challenging for me and that what got me into doing it. I worked very hard on this problem. I faced many challenges like I did not know how I will know which sound is higher. I overcome this problem my recording the sound and then I put it in the computer. After I finished I was able to know the answer and I was so happy. People use this application in many things like when they put their ears on the railways to know if the train is coming.

Salim Makes PLanes

I fell in Love with planes since I was 10 years old. I wanted to be a plane engineer. That will explain my choice of the scientific problem. I wanted to know how can the design of a paper plane affects its ability to fly. I did some research and I have found out that the plane can fly further if the weather is stable, the plane not heavy, and the weight is distributed correctly so that the cabin does not get so heavy and fall down. I had some challenges. When my paper aero plane were ready I wanted to throw them but I couldn’t because the weather was windy so I had to do it the next day. I did not fine the right show board color. The project has helped me to improve my written and spoken English and also sharpened my presentation skills.

The Battery that Never Dies

I chose this topic “batteries” because everybody uses it in different situations. The kids get upset while playing with their toys if the battery doesn’t stay for long. Whether it was the musical device or the radio, the battery and how strong it should be is a key factor. In general the batteries are very important that’s why I chose it. In the dark or in the light, at home or outside, the batteries is one thing that helps everybody the most. While doing my project I faced a number of challenges: First when I went to buy the stop watch I did not find it in the grocery and I had to go to a place that is thirty kilometer away from where I live in Um Ghafa. The second challenge was when I wanted to record my experiment. A problem happened and I discovered after I finished that I did not do any recording. I had to start all over again. I learnt so many things from my project. I have improved my reading, writing, speaking, and presentation skills. I learnt from my project how to do presentations and establish good eye contact. I have also learnt a lot of science fair project terminology like Hypothesis, Purpose, conclusion and procedure. I learnt how to be a critical thinker by listening to my classmates projects and giving them feedback. My feedback was divided into strengths and weaknesses. The most important thing I learnt from my project is that I should plan before doing anything.

Challenges and Solutions

I did this project “Do Dark colors Absorb heat faster than light colors” Because it is one of the issues related to our lives. You wonder what to wear in a hot sunny day, but if you did my project you will have no problem in choosing what to wear. My project is not only useful in choosing clothes, it is also useful in many things like the color of your car and the paint of your house. I faced many challenges while doing my project. The First challenge I had was to choose a problem to research. I overcame it soon afterwards. Another challenge was to create a movie of my project. I managed to do that after watching some of my classmates doing it in class. The third challenge was to record my voice for the movie because I did not have the right program to do it. This problem was solved by using the teacher’s lab top where he had the programs needed.

IAT Science Fair

We were introduced to the idea of the science project by Mr. Ahmed Moustafa, the English teacher. It was something new for us. After that he showed us some samples of a science fair projects and that was very useful for us. He also gave the students a list of science fair ideas then discussed those ideas with most of the students. After we saw those samples and ideas each student found a scientific problem. After that Mr. Ahmed explained the scientific method and some keyword about it like; hypothesis – procedure. The students started planning their experiments, did it at home and took pictures while they were doing the experiment. A student amazed the class and came with a full sample of a project, so that helped the other students in class in doing their projects. After all students finished their projects they started to record how they did the project. Then each student presented his project in front of the students in class and they commented on them to show the students how they can make it better. After that each student created a power point presentation and a movie. Mohammed Rashed created a website for the students to put their movies. Each student brought two showboards and a wax gun . The teacher showed us samples of showboards and how they are designed. Every Student built his own showboard. Then we created a science fair in which we presented our work to other students.

The More You Know the More You Grow

When Mr. Ahmed Moustafa, our English Teacher, told us about the science project I was worried a little bit about this project because I have never done one like this. I picked my project carefully because I wanted a good project. I felt very happy when I started doing my project. I prepared my plan of how to do my project in a good way and I created a list of the material that I am going to buy and thank god I have done my project in a neat and exact way . Of course behind each good project there must be challenges and trouble that faces the student . Now I am going to tell you the challenges that faced me while doing the project . The first one was when I went to sanaaeia at 10 o’clock to buy my material that day was Friday so a lot of shops were closed so it was hard to find an open shop for the electrical tools and I was lucky to find a shop that has the tools to do my project . In the second day, I started to gather the parts with my uncle , who helped me in my project one of the light bulbs fall down and broke as a result for this we spent two or three hours searching for the same kind of that light bulb . I also used the computer to make a presentation about my project using Microsoft Power Point. Then I used Movie maker to make a video about my project so the technology played an important role in my project. I learned from my project that I must use the proper light bulb wattage for a certain area. For example for a dark place like the basement I can use a light bulb from 100 to 200 watts but for an area that is not too dark like the living room I can use a light bulb from 60 to 100 watts. I also learnt how to do electric work like sitting up a plug or an electric switch.

A Tale of an Independent Learner

When I wanted to do the project the time was 9:00 pm so I can’t make a video at night.
I had to wait until morning. In the morning, I woke up early. I needed eggs for the project and the grocery was closed so I got some eggs from our hens. The cock become crazy and started running after me. And when I made the video I recorded two times. I learned to do every thing by myself because easy come easy go. I learned to prepare every thing before one day at least because of what happened to me when I needed the eggs. I learned that I mustn’t take the eggs from the hens. Mohammed Mubarak helped me in making the video. I used the computer and the camera in the project. I used the computer to make the power point and the movie or video. To make the video I used windows movie maker and it is easy and nice program. I used the windows power point to make the powr point. I used the camera to take photos and make the video.

Learning by Doing at IAT

My project was ‘Does the Sound Travel Best in Solid, Liquid or gas. At the beginning I asked my self ‘which experiment can I use to know which sound is the best? ’. I found one nice experiment. The problem was how I can know which sound is the higher. I thought for a long time then I found one plan. I will record the sound then I will put it in the computer and I will see. I used Digital MP3 player to record the sound and I used my phone to take the pictures. My brother helped me on taking pictures. After I finished the experiment I started in the presentation. I put the pictures and I wrote about it. When I was doing the presentation I learnt how I can organize the color and save my work after every step. Then I started creating the video by a program called Movie Maker. I did not know how to use Movie Maker but my teacher asked Marten ‘principal son’ to give us one lesson about this program. So I recorded my sound while explaining the presentation and I saved every slide as pictures. Then I put the sound and pictures in the Movie Maker and I organize sound with pictures. I learnt from this project that the sound travels best in solids and in liquids better than gas. I learnt to depend on myself. I was very happy while I did my project and I enjoyed it when I was doing my experiment.

Full Mark For Me

I am writing a reflection about my work in cycle three. I am writing the marks that I deserve in: 1- Class work 2- Homework 3- Attendance 4- Quizzes 5- Behavior in class
6- Speaking in class 7- Projects .
1. Class work
In Cycle three, I just deserve a full mark because I have worked hard in class, I did the exercises that our English teacher told us, I also worked in the big poster that most of the students worked on it. Our English teacher told us to buy a grammar book to practice grammar so I did the exercises that he told us to work on.
2. Homework
In homework I really deserve a full mark because each time Ahmed Moustafa, my English teacher, asks us to do homework, I just do it and give it to him at the time that he needs it to see it and check my mistakes in class and share ideas with other classmates. Also when I do my homework, I always make sure to make it a quality work. I must stay on this work and try to improve it to be sure that I will always get full marks.

3. Attendance

I always come to class early so I can’t be late. I don’t deserve a full mark I just deserve ninety-nine out of hundred because I was late one time because I had my breakfast at the cafeteria at the end of the break. To avoid this mistake I must eat my breakfast early and don’t waste my time doing nothing.

4. Quizzes

The Quizzes are good things because you can test your skills in the subject to know your level. If you got bad marks don’t be sad just improve knowledge in this subject to have high marks.

5. Behavior in class

In this thing I really deserve one-hundred out of one-hundred because I never made my English teacher or other subject upset with me because of my bad behavior.

6. Speaking in class

I don’t think that I will get less than one-hundred out of one-hundred because I always try to speak in English and try to do my best by not speaking in Arabic during English classes.

7. Projects

In the Projects I am who puts the marks for all students in our class because I am the Projects Officer. The mark that I have got and I am who wrote this mark for myself was ninety-eight out of one-hundred. It was like that because some of the words in my project were not clear because I didn’t check my work before printing. This mistake was a stupid problem because of my hurry ness. I will always remember this mistake so I never make this mistake again and to succeed in my work and projects and get high marks. This thing also will help me a lot in my future.

A wise: Never speak Arabic in class. Never make any teacher upset with your behavior. Always do your homework at time. Never sleep in class. Always check your work and make sure that it is clear and understandable before giving it to your teacher.
